Scenario design by Nicole Lander
Operation Anaconda

Mission Requirements
Four phase mission: 1. Hot LZ insertion, 2. Identification of SAM site radio back, 3. Take position on high ridge to spot B-52 strike, 4. Move to designed extraction point under hot pursuit.

Terrain: A valley in between Mountains/Hills

Players: At least 40 gamers are needed. The more gamers the better, the scenario is designed to go to as many as 300 or more players!

TIME: maximum 90 minutes

Background: (Do not read to gamers each team gets private briefing):  In March 2002 fighting in the U.S. invasion of Afghanistan was renewed as coalition forces made a massive push against about 500 to 1000 al Qaeda and Taliban forces in the Shahi-Kot Valley and Arma Mountains southeast of Zormat, in an operation code-named Operation Anaconda, after the anaconda boa constrictor.

The mission: The scenario puts the Australian/US forces into the situation faced by the Rangers/SAS. They will be heavily outnumbers (about 1:10 ratio) and their goal is purely survival.

The Teams: To play this scenario you need the following:

  • 30% of the gamers assigned to the Australians/Americans
  • 70% of the gamers assigned to the al-Qaeda and Taliban forces

US Rangers & Australian Special Air Service Regiment Briefing: On March 4th, seven American Special Operations Forces soldiers were killed as they attempt to infiltrate the Shahi Kot Valley on a low-flying helicopter reconnaissance mission. HQ believes that major enemy activity in the area is unlikely, you and patrols like you have been surveying the area to estimate enemy strength.

The army sends in a second chopper (your crew) your mission is to gather invaluable and in-depth operational intelligence and forward this to US Intelligence analysts. Once uncovered you are to evac by calling back the Chinook helicopter.

You enter the game in the middle of the valley and move west (to your right).

Rangers/SAS:

  • 10% x company commando (spitfire/scorpion & 2-way radio on Con3)
  • 10% x Signalman/RTO (commando & 2-way radio)
  • 50% x Riflemen (commando)
  • 20% x LMG (morita)
  • 10% x Medic (LARP Medic rules, spitfire)

This is the force break down with different numbers of gamers assigned to the Australians/US.
Min Players Max Players Platoon HQ Medic M60s Rifle squad/sections
10 14 1 1 1 1/1
15 24 1 1 2 1/2
25 34 1 1 3 1/3
35 46 2 2 4 2/4
47 56 2 2 5 2/5
57 66 2 2 6 2/6
67 78 3 3 7 3/7
79 88 3 3 8 3/8
89 98 3 3 9 3/9

All allied soldiers are Special Ops, 6HP each.

"MARTIN WALLACE: I asked Clint if he wanted me to establish communications. He said yep, so I ripped out my antenna. First call, I got back into our headquarters at Bagram and told them we were in a bit of a shit-fight. I was later told by the young fellow who was on the radio one of the other officers behind was asking what I meant by a 'shit-fight'."

Mechanics: Shahi Kot Valley engaged by mortars, RPGs, heavy machine-guns, light machine-guns — basically everything that was available in the armoury. We later learnt that they'd actually landed and moved into the vicinity of the al-Qa'ida command post.

Available Fire Support: B-52 bombers. These are not laser-guided so the commander of the Australians need to roll 2 or better not to have the bombs land on own position.

Only the Signalman/RTO may coordinate indirect fire. The RTO may use all of the available batteries once every 20 minutes. If the RTO is unable to coordinate, then their is no B-52 support. Indirect fire is adjudicated by the referee. No re-spawns. AC-130 gun ship cover, to extract Apache attack helicopters.

Briefing: On March 4th, seven American Special Operations Forces soldiers were killed as they attempt to infiltrate the Shahi Kot Valley on a low-flying helicopter
